Honda GX35 for UAV Projects: What to Check Before Integration

The Honda GX35 is a small four-stroke engine developed for handheld power equipment. It can be a subject of UAV propulsion development, but a familiar industrial engine is not automatically a validated aircraft powerplant.

Honda describes the GX35 within its mini four-stroke family and explains the lubrication design in its engine technology overview. For actual installation and maintenance requirements, use the GX35 manual matching the engine serial range.

Lubrication and installed weight

The GX35’s lubrication arrangement differs from engines that rely on oil mixed into the fuel. Follow the specified fuel and oil requirements for the exact engine rather than transferring a mixture ratio from another four-stroke design.

Compare complete installed configurations: engine, oil, exhaust, intake, EFI equipment, fuel system, cooling and mounting. An engine-only weight comparison leaves out components that can change the result.

Output must be checked against the intended load

The required power, engine speed and operating duration depend on the aircraft and load. A propeller installation and a generator installation need their own assessment. Use measured output and consumption under relevant conditions rather than inferring suitability from displacement alone.

The original article discussed hobbyist modifications, including changes to compression and carburetor dimensions. Those references are not approved conversion instructions or a guaranteed route to additional power; they have not been retained here as a build procedure.

EFI conversion involves more than replacing a carburetor

Identify the exact intake, mounting pattern, clearance and actuation arrangement before selecting a throttle body. Confirm the proposed ECU, fuel supply and calibration, including the test work needed for the intended operating conditions.

Our throttle-body reference explains the distinction between mounting dimensions and internal bore measurements. A reference dimension cannot replace measurement of the hardware being converted.

Discuss the configuration before selecting components

For a GX35 development enquiry, include the serial/model details, intended duty, existing installation and any modifications. Compare EFI system options and ask which interfaces and calibration work would need confirmation.

Discuss your application

Send us your engine model, intended fuel, operating requirements and available installation details. Discuss your configuration with Löweheiser.
